Chapter 1

What in this chapter made an impression on you?

  1. I really enjoyed this chapter, especially because right now I am not enjoying my job because of things regarding management. I like how the chapter began by focusing on effectiveness and efficiency, because I don't think people realize how important these two concepts are. And I believe that these two things alone can make or break an organization; you can have the smartest people, the best software and the most expensive equipment but if you can't be effective and efficient none of these things will matter. I also thought that the 5 functions of management were interesting; planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. What I noticed was that, in relation to my own job, these are the areas where I believe my manager lacks and thus why I am having such a hard time enjoying my job. For example, my manager is horrible at planning and organizing - she never has an agenda but for anyone but herself and often leaves me and the other employees "hanging" not knowing how to answer questions or handle situations. She has also never officially trained me and so the job of training has been put on other employees, we are all confused on who should be doing what and when.. Especially me! Another section of the reading that I found interesting was on page 15 where they outlined the Top Ten Mistakes Managers Make.. I am not sure if I am just bitter about my current job situation, but my boss has some of these characteristics, such as insensitive, cold, and overmanaging-unable to delegate or build team.

Overall, I think the chapter was very enlightening! I enjoyed the fact that I could relate these things to my current situation, and I hope that by taking this course I will be able to recognize these common mistakes and be able to avoid them... As well as be able to be a better, more prepared and organized manager!

  2. This is a perfect reflection on the chapter and incorporating it into your own experiences. You have a great opportunity to think about how you could make different choices than your manager when you are in her shoes.
